Abstract:

Background and objectives: The ideal drug for treatment of a wide range of supraventricular arrhythmia hasn't yet been developed. Previous studies have shown antihypertensive and negative inotropic effects of the Urtica dioica L. (nettle). Therefore, the aim of present study is to determine the rate dependent inhibitory effects of ethanol extract of nettle root and investigate the role of adrenoceptors in the anti-arrhythmic mechanism of nettle on the isolated rabbit atrio-ventricular node. Methods: Urtica dioica roots were collected from Gorgan (Golestan, Iran). Male New Zealand rabbits (n=7) were used in all of the experiments. Experimental stimulation protocols (WBCL; Recovery, Facilitation, Fatigue) were applied to assess electrophysiological properties of Node. All protocols were repeated in the presence and absence (control) of different concentration (0.25-0.5 w/v %) of nettle and 1 μM nadolol. Data were shown as Mean±SE, difference between groups statistically were assessed by SPSS software. Results: Nettle (0.5 w/v) significantly decreased basic and functional properties of node as WBCL, ERP, FRP, AVCT and magnitude of fatigue (∆AH) significantly increased but ∆FRP significantly decreased. In the presence of nadolol (1μM) as a nonselective β-blocker, nettle (0.3 mg/L) could not repeat its effects on electrophysiological properties of AV-node. Conclusion: The results showed the modifying properties of Urtica dioica root extract. It may be considered as a candidate for the treatment of supraventicular arrhythmias.

Role of nitric oxide on the electrophysiological properties of isolated rabbit atrioventricular node by extracellular field potential during atrial fibrillation

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to determine direct effects of NO modulation on protective electrophysiological properties of atrioventricular node (AV node) in the experimental model of AF in rabbit. Methods: Isolated perfused rabbit AV nodal preparations were used in two groups. In the first group (N=7), LNAME (50μM) was applied. In the second group (N=12), different concent...

Research Paper: The Effects of Urtica Dioica L. Root Extract on Rat Testis

Introduction: Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is the most important genus in the plant family Urticaceae. Urtica Dioica root Extract (UDE) is widely used for the treatment of prostate hyperplasia. Side effects of UDE were not studied on other organs such as testes (an important organ of the male reproductive system). Furthermore, antagonist effects of UDE on testosterone were considered. The...

The role of Na+-K+-ATPase in the basic and rate-dependent properties of isolated perfused rabbit Atrioventricular Node

Introduction: Ouabaine is a well-known atrioventricular (AV) node depressant agent, but its effects on functional properties of the AV node have not been cleared. The aim of the present study was to determine how ouabaine administration modifies the rate-dependent properties of the AV node. Methods: Selective stimulation protocols were used to quantify independently electrophysiological prop...

Age-dependent dynamic electrophysiological field potential behavior of atrioventricular node during experimental AF in rabbit

Introduction: Electrophysiological studies have demonstrated a relationship between aging and atrioventricular (AV) nodal conduction and refractoriness. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of nodal aging on dynamic AV nodal field potential recording during atrial fibrillation (AF) in rabbit. Methods: Two groups of male New Zealand rabbits (neonatal 2-week-olds and adult...

Frequency-dependent electrophysiological properties of concealed slow pathway of isolated rabbit atrioventricular node preparation after fast pathway ablation in a functional model

Introduction: Intranodal pathways of atrioventricular (AV) node play a vital role in the delay of conduction time in response to various atrial inputs. The present study was aimed to determine the frequency-dependent electrophysiological properties of concealed slow pathway according to a functional model of isolated rabbit atrioventricular node preparation after fast pathway ablation. Meth...
